Carmelo Anthony's Record 62 Points Big Win For Nike

Carmelo Anthony set two scoring records last night when he pumped in 62 points as his New York Knicks defeated the Charlotte Bobcats 125 96 at Madison Square Garden: Bernard King's Christmas Day 1984 franchise record of 60 points and Kobe Bryant's record for points scored (61) at the current Garden, which opened in 1968. Unfortunately, the game will still only count as one win for the dreadful Knicks, who are now 16 27. And who knows if Melo will even be on the Knicks next season? This summer, he is expected to opt out of the final year of his Knicks' contract worth $23.3 million in return for a richer, long term deal. But Anthony's record shattering evening should give his biggest sponsor, apparel maker Nike, a boost. Anthony is Nike's 12th biggest endorsement deal of all time, worth $8 million a year. That puts Anthony only behind Michael Jordan ($60 million a year) and LeBron James ($10 million a year) among basketball players who endorse Nike. The Carmelo Anthony Collection includes basketball sneakers, shirts, pants, well, you get the idea. With the Knicks struggling on the court this season and Anthony's teammate and Nike pitchman Amar'e Stoudemire injured, the company needed some some endorsement juice from its investment in the Knicks. Last night Anthony delivered. I like to take lots and lots of numbers and turn them into proprietary concepts and multi platform content. Three of my longstanding publishing creations: the valuations of sports teams, ranking actors and movie studios on bang for the buck (ROI) and the Forbes Fab 40 (the most valuable sports brands). My most recent idea was Names You Need To Know, which broadened my concept of list creation to include direct input from our audience. I also like to take apart corporate balance sheets to measure earnings quality and have a passion for economics (my MBA thesis at Long Island University was an empirical study on the cause of inflation in which regression analysis showed a significant correlation between the general level of prices and the money supply). Besides being an Executive Editor at Forbes I also have a gig as co host and Managing Editor of the 3 time New York Emmy award winning Forbes SportsMoney on the YES Network with my buddies, co host Bob Lorenz and producer David Alfreds, both of whom have new balance running taught me a tremendous amount. My brother in arms is Kurt Badenhausen, whom I have worked with for many years and knows more about sports numbers than anyone.
